Digital Media Manager, Josie Deacon, interviews the awesome women behind The Sycamore Gap, a feminist short film.
Set in 1841 the film follows a romantic affair of two women in 1841. Mina works in Blackwood House and finds herself entering an affair with Lady Clara. Clara’s Husband becomes aware of the affair forcing both women to face some harsh truths. Mina is torn between logic and emotion.
The film began development in late 2016. The casting and initial rehearsals began in May 2017, with the shooting script being completed in time for September 2017. The Sycamore Gap started principal photography in November 2017. The film is currently making its way around various festivals. The film was financed on a low budget and supported by The Northumberland National Park and Newcastle City Council.
The film’s influences include The National Theatre’s Jane Eyre, Andrea Arnold’s Wuthering Heights, The Dutchess & other stories of strong women throughout history.

Josie Deacon
Josie grew up in the capital of the Highlands, Inverness, in a busy household with two older brothers, a cat, and a dog. She left school at 17 and moved to Newcastle, where she studied Drama and Scriptwriting at Northumbria University. University was the making of Josie, she got involved with a lot of film and theatre, becoming president of the Drama Society, the Scriptwriting Society, and producing, directing and acting in several short films for student film companies. After graduation Josie moved to Edinburgh with her cat, Twiggy.
When not at work, Josie loves to write, play video games and Dungeons and Dragons and also volunteers with animal welfare projects. Josie loves all animals but squirrels are her favourite.
